The Super Easy new way to get access to your HMRC Personal Tax and Self Assessment Account

Your Personal Tax Account (PTA) will help you manage your personal tax affairs in one secure place. It also offers a range of other services – like giving you the ability to check, update and manage your details with HMRC online. This article outlines easy steps to help you access your Personal Tax Account.

To complete this process smoothly, you will need details of your:

  • National Insurance Number
  • E-mail address
  • Any two Identification documentation. It could be a UK passport, Payslips or P60, Self-assessment, Tax Credits and Voice ID, or Northern Ireland Driving License.

How to access your Personal Tax and Self-assessment account – step by step instructions

From April 2022 – HMRC will use a new way to verify your identity and set up your HMRC Personal Tax and Self-Assessment Account.

Follow the following steps to access your account:

Step 1: Head to HMRC website

Go to the HMRC website and click Start Now.

Step 2: Sign in your Government Getaway

Sign in to your account using your Government Getaway username and password.

Step 3: E-mail address

You must enter your e-mail address and be ready to access it. HMRC will send you the code needed in the next step.

Step 4: Enter the code to verify the e-mail address

  • Open your e-mail address and get the code sent to you by HMRC.

  • Enter the code in the box and click Confirm.

  • The next page will verify HMRC has confirmed your e-mail address. Click Continue.

Step 5: Name

Enter your full name and click Continue.

Step 6: Identity verification and check

The next series of questions will help HMRC verify your identity.

Do the following:

  • First, enter your name and Date of Birth. Then click Continue.

  • Second, fill in your National Insurance number – then click Continue.

  • To confirm your identity, HMRC will need details of any two items from the list. Click Continue.

  • Choose any two identification items you are comfortable with and click Continue.

  • Answer the security questions correctly to complete the identity check. Click continue to proceed.
